What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed in the jawbone to secure crowns, bridges, or dentures. They can be used to replace one or many teeth. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone can be lost as well. A dental implant helps stabilize the bone to prevent its loss. The implants are typically made of titanium and titanium alloys because the metal is lightweight, strong, and easily fuses with the jawbone.

Dental implants are made up of three parts: the implant screw, the implant abutment that holds the crown in place, and the tooth restorations or crowns (the visible component). We work closely with dental laboratories and many lab procedures are performed in house so we control the quality of the restorations and ensure they are customized to fit perfectly for each patient.

About Dental Implant Treatment

Implant therapy is a prosthodontic procedure with a surgical component. The prosthodontic and surgical parts can range from straightforward to complex and may require collaboration with other specialists.

Careful diagnosis and treatment planning are crucial to obtaining a successful implant therapy outcome. As prosthodontists, the doctors at Andresen DDS have undergone an additional three years of intensive training after dental school to specialize in the restoration and replacement of missing teeth and other structures of the mouth. We work with your dentist and other oral care providers to develop the treatment and post-treatment care plan that is best for you.

How to maintain and care for dental implants

Dental implants require the same at-home care your own, natural teeth do. You have to brush and floss to keep your implants clean and plaque-free. After treatment, we work closely with each patient to develop a customized care plan including follow-up visits to monitor your implant, teeth, and gums.
