What is an inlay and onlay?

Inlays are used instead of fillings to replace a small amount of a tooth’s surface usually due to decay. Inlays made of a tooth-colored material such as ceramic or porcelain allow it to be bonded to the tooth’s surface.

Onlays also fit inside the tooth, however they extend further onto the chewing surface of the tooth. Onlays are also made of tooth-colored material like ceramic or porcelain.

How are inlays and onlays made?

Once the decay is removed from the tooth and the area is properly shaped, an impression is made to give to the lab for custom fabrication of the inlay or onlay. Typically, the tooth will get a temporary filling. During the second visit, the temporary filling will be removed and the inlay/onlay is cemented or bonded to the tooth. Adjustments may be made to provide the most comfortable fit.

How to care/maintain inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays require proper brushing and flossing. They will need to cared for similar to natural teeth.
