What are crowns?

Crowns permanently cover a tooth to restore its normal function and appearance. Crowns may be made as all metal, porcelain fused to metal, or all-ceramic (porcelain). Crowns are indicated for teeth with very large fillings, teeth that have had a root canal, fractured teeth, worn teeth and misshapen and/or discolored teeth.

The crown can improve the tooth’s appearance, shape, alignment, and will also protect weakened teeth from further breakage.

How are crowns made?

After the tooth to receive the crown is prepared, an impression is made to send to the laboratory for custom crown fabrication. There are various materials available for crown fabrication including metals, ceramics, and zirconia. Your prosthodontist will select the appropriate material to meet your functional and esthetic needs.

How to care and maintain dental crowns

Dental crowns should be treated as if they were your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing will help keep the crowns clean and the gums surrounding the crowns healthy.

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-made shells of tooth-colored porcelain or resin bonded to the front of the tooth. They are designed to correct chipped, broken, misaligned or uneven teeth. Veneers help to improve the esthetics of a tooth and to protect the tooth from further damage.

How are veneers made?

In order for the thickness of the teeth to not be dramatically changed, the enamel of the affected teeth will be shaved down and an impression is made. The veneers are then custom fabricated in the laboratory forming thin shells of porcelain which are then bonded to the teeth.

How to maintain and care for veneers

Just like natural teeth, daily brushing and flossing are an important part of dental health. Proper brushing and flossing will help to keep the veneered tooth and the surrounding areas plaque free.

What are dental bridges?

Bridges are a non-surgical option for restoring missing teeth. Bridges are used to restore proper chewing and speaking abilities, maintain the shape of the patient’s face, correct bite and prevent remaining teeth from shifting position.

How are dental bridges made?

Teeth on both sides of the missing space are prepared for a crown. The false tooth is joined to the crowns, and the entire bridge is cemented to the prepared tooth. The bridge can not be removed.

How to maintain and care for dental bridges

Bridges will need to cared for similar to natural teeth. With daily brushing and flossing, good oral hygiene and regular checkups will help to prolong the lifespan of the bridge. Special aids are available to help keep it clean, our team will help advise on the best aid for you.
