A prosthodontist is a dentist who has undergone an additional three years of intensive training after dental school to specialize in the restoration and replacement of missing teeth and other structures of the mouth.

Maxillofacial Prosthetics
Maxillofacial prosthetics is a subspecialty of prosthodontics involving the rehabilitation of defects or disabilities that are congenitally, trauma, or disease related. Prostheses may be used to restore oral function (swallowing, speech, chewing) as well as esthetics. Devices may also be used to position or shield structures during radiation therapy. These prostheses include:
- Prosthetic eyes, ears, noses, or other facial structures
- Obturators - restore function and esthetics after total/partial loss of the maxilla (upper jaw)
- Mandibular resection appliances - restore function and esthetics after total/partial loss of the mandible (lower jaw)
- Speech aid prostheses
- Radiation shields
- Nasoalveoloar molding (NAM) appliances - used to shape the gums, lips, and nose of newborns prior to cleft lip and palate surgery
Maxillofacial prosthodontists work closely with head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists, speech pathologists, and other medical and dental specialists to manage a patient's care.
